Checkers Catering Goes Green!

As one of the Bay Area’s most progressive catering companies, Checkers Catering & Special Events was recently certified as an Alameda County Green Business. The certificate recognizes Checkers commitment to comply with environmental regulations; conserve energy, materials, water and other resources and to implement practices to prevent pollution and waste.

Denise Slavitt, owner of Checkers Catering explains, “I have always believed that environmentally sound practices are an important step in supporting the community that supports our business. It is such a good thing to do for the environment and for our neighbors here in the Tri-Valley.”

To qualify for Green Business certification, an organization undergoes an extensive operational audit to certify that it complies with all environmental regulations and actively takes steps to conserve natural resources and prevent pollution. The exact criteria for certification are dependent on the type of business. Specifically for Checkers, this included reducing weekly waste by separating food waste for composting, supplying biodegradable plates, installing low-flow faucet nozzles, energy saving lighting, purchasing organic and bulk packaged foods and recycling office products and other packaging.

When the company moved into their 10,000 square foot facility in Livermore over two years ago, they were already actively recycling and conscience about conservation techniques. The facilities manager, Randy Smith says, “When we were first introduced to the concept of a Green Business certification we worked with a representative in Alameda County who helped set up an audit and work with us to complete the requirements that are specifically set up for our type of business. In the end, the programs have increased our operational efficiencies and it is great to know we are helping the environment as well.”

The Green Business Program is a regional Bay Area program that has certified over 850 businesses and public agencies since 1996. For additional information on how you can participate, visit www.greenbiz.abag.ca.gov
